Service Description
SALSA/BACHATA MUSICALITY 101 (SBM 101) This course is for students that want to understand the musicality of Salsa and Bachata music. In this class everyone gets to play different instruments week after week. We would create our own percussion mini-ensemble each week and work on creating the music from the ground up in order to hear it, feel it, and understand it more. Students will have the opportunity to try playing the percussion instruments with a more trained percussionist as a pseudo-shadow. Playing alongside this “mentor” would help give the student a sense of bearing as they try to navigate the rhythm the student is playing on their current instrument. In these classes, we would also listen to chosen songs and analyze them. We will be working on things like finding the main downbeat (the “1”) and understanding the thematic cycles in Salsa and Bachata songs. We will work on time changes and how and why they happen. We would examine different instruments in each song and how they converse with each other and how we can use the knowledge of this conversation to understand the music better. These classes are semi-progressive. Each class would go over concepts and rhythms learned in the previous. But people can drop-in as well due to the relaxed and spontaneous nature of the class. Prerequisite: None required What would you learn?: Tumbao, Salsa and Bachata Bass lines, Clave, Bongos, Guiras, Cowbell, Downbeat, Upbeat, Different Sections of Salsa and Bachata Music, Time Changes, Dropped Bars, e.t.c.
