SALSA

Salsa is a spicy Latin dance with origins from different folkloric dances in Latin America. These different folkloric dances and rhythms were the ingredients that were combined in the kitchen of New York to create the hot, spicy sauce we call Salsa.

Here at RastaSalsa Academy, we bring the same energy and heat of salsa from the 60's and 70's that has taken the world by storm to Denver, CO.

MAMBO
Mambo in the context of our curriculum refers to Salsa dancing On2. It should be noted that although there are some significant differences that can be discussed further later, for our purposes, the Mambo courses refer to Salsa, just danced in a slightly different - contratiempo - style.

Mambo has a very long and interesting relationship to Salsa, both as a parent/predecessor and close cousin. As the Cuban Son migrated to the United States in the early 1900s, the influence of Jazz and the big band era along with other artistic forces led to a powerful sound that combined the roaring sounds of the horns with the bubbling rhythms of the percussion section. This Mambo sound of the 40s and 50s later evolved into what we know today as salsa. But the Mambo lives on!

SALSA MUSIC - MUSICALITY

An important way to connect with the dance is to connect more with the music. One of the main attributes of Salsa Music is the number and diversity of instruments played and the dense polyrhythmic combinations they produce. This makes it relatively hard for the untrained ear to understand the cyclical patterns created in the music, which in turn makes it hard for the dancer to dance in time. The musicality purpose of these classes is to help individuals understand the music a little bit more - One instrument at a time.

SALSA MUSICALITY 101 (SM 101)
This course is also for students that want to understand the musicality of the Salsa and Bachata music. In this class everyone gets to play different instruments week after week. We would create our own percussion mini-ensemble each week and work on creating the music from the ground up in order to hear it, feel it, and understand it more.

These classes are semi-progressive. Each class would go over concepts and rhythms learned in the previous. But people can drop-in as well due to the relaxed and spontaneous nature of the class.

Prerequisite: None required

What would you learn?: Tumbao, Salsa Bass line, clave, cowbell, downbeat, upbeat, time changes, dropped bars, clave and its role in salsa music, e.t.c.

SPANISH MUSIC - LYRICS AND MUSICALITY
One of the ways to connect deeper within the dance of the Latin/Afro Caribbean expression is to understand what is being sung. And as over 75% of Salsa/Bachata songs are in the Spanish language, it seems to be a good idea to have a general idea of Spanish as used in these songs. These classes work in two ways: We use learning Spanish to understand the song, and we use understanding the song to learn Spanish. This aspect of the class is perfect for anyone who wants to learn Spanish. Period. Learning and singing lyrics in Spanish is a great tool for learning how to speak the language.

SPANISH LYRICS AND MUSICALITY 101 (SLYM 101)
This course is for individuals that want to learn how to speak Spanish by learning the lyrics of Salsa/Bachata songs. This course is also for students that want to understand the musicality of the Salsa and Bachata music. Understanding things such as, downbeat, contratiempo, thematic cycles (how to find the 1), time changes, dropped bars e.t.c.

These classes are not progressive. Each class would go over a different song each week and hence content would vary from class to class.

Prerequisite: None required

What would you learn?: General Spanish words and phrases as used in the songs, sections of a salsa Song, sections of a Bachata song, downbeat, upbeat, time changes, dropped bars, clave and its role in salsa music, e.t.c.

BACHATA MUSIC - MUSICALITY

An important way to connect with the dance is to connect more with the music. One of the main attributes of Bachata Music is the diversity of instruments played and the dense polyrhythmic combinations they produce. This makes it relatively hard for the untrained ear to understand the cyclical patterns created in the music, which in turn makes it hard for the dancer to dance in time. The musicality purpose of these classes is to help individuals understand the music a little bit more - One instrument at a time.

BACHATA MUSICALITY 101 (SM 101)
This course is also for students that want to understand the musicality of the Bachata music.

What would you learn?: Derecho, Ma’jao, Mambo sections. Bachata Bass line, downbeat, upbeat, time changes, dropped bars, e.t.c.

SALSA/BACHATA MUSIC - MUSICALITY

An important way to connect with the dance is to connect more with the music. One of the main attributes of Afro-Caribbean music is the number and diversity of instruments played and the dense polyrhythmic combinations they produce. This makes it relatively hard for the untrained ear to understand the cyclical patterns created in the music, which in turn makes it hard for the dancer to dance in time. The purpose of these musicality classes is to help individuals understand the music a little bit more - one instrument at a time ; one song at a time.

SALSA/BACHATA MUSICALITY 101 (SBM 101)
This course is for students that want to understand the musicality of the Salsa and Bachata music. In this class everyone gets to play different instruments week after week. We would create our own percussion mini-ensemble each week and work on creating the music from the ground up in order to hear it, feel it, and understand it more. Students will have the opportunity to try playing the percussion instruments with a more trained percussionist as a pseudo-shadow. Playing alongside this “mentor” would help give the student a sense of bearing as they try to play their current instrument.

In these classes, we would also listen to chosen songs and analyze them. We will be working on things like finding the main downbeat (the “1”) and understanding the thematic cycles in Salsa and Bachata songs. We will work on time changes and how and why they happen. We would examine different instruments in each song and how they converse with each other and how we can use the knowledge of this conversation to understand the music better.
